Gordon Brown has urged Britons to put their sporting rivalries aside and come together in support for the common side in the rugby World Cup final.

Speaking from his home in Govan, Glasgow, the prime minister said that all the UK should unite with Scotland and support South Africa when they play England at the Stade de France on Saturday.

Scotland the brave

"It saddens me as a Briton that age-old rivalries mean that we do not tend to support the same side, even at such a prestigious event," Mr Brown said as he appeared before reporters in a "see you jimmy" wig, tam o'shanter, kilt, wife beater top and satire painted face.

"Scotland has a long tradition of supporting whoever England are playing. I think that it would be churlish of the British people to not do so merely because of some petty, ancient differences."

Dutch courage

He then proceeded to neck a can of Tennent's Super T and cry out "Oh, Diego Maradona, He put the English OUT, OUT, OUT!"

Answering questions from the gathered media, an increasingly swaying and belligerent Mr Brown pointed to members of the press and declared: "Aye, it's a real shame right that we've got three great sporting nations – well, four if you must include Northern Ireland – yet we cannae bear it when one of them does well and achieves its goal.

Spanish fly-half

"What Scotland has got here is a prime opportunity to crush England in the final, and I think that it would be a sign of how we've come on as a country for of us all to get behind them."

Lambasting what he said to be "ne'er do wells" and "gobshites", Mr Brown said that the heritage and links to South Africa and its history of petty bitterness based on national and racial differences showed that there was more in common with Scotland than many may first think.

"Now beat it," Mr Brown concluded, before throwing his slipper at the press corps.
