Mohammed cartoon spin-off series enrages Muslims
The purported title card for Mohammed and Pals |
Branding the series "against Islamic values" and "not as good as the originals", Muslims from Islamabad, Cairo and Bradford are going as far as calling for death to those who created, commissioned and gave series approval for the cartoons, called "Mohammed and Pals".
"Depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, as a single father trying to raise his own child Fatima on his own whilst trying not to seduce his nine-year-old neighbour Aisha is not acceptable," bellowed Ayatollah Khamenei in an interview, before burning a Danish flag and tossing some Danish bacon onto it.
Ant tits
Pausing only to spit on a mannequin of the Danish prime minister, the Islamic wiseman added: "It is even less acceptable that it will be shown on Friday's CITV shows, for is there not a verse in the Koran that it says 'And Allah did spake saying, 'though I love thee Dec, Ant gets right on my tits''."
The most controversial move, however, appears to be the introduction of a new character, Jihadi, nephew of the prophet who keeps getting into high jinks that often land his uncle in a spot of hot water.
Defending the show, series producer Lars Erikkson, who was not onvovled on the original Jyllands-Posten cartoon show, said: "While The Simpsons was fun for all the traditional Western nuclear family, Mohammed and Pals is for the entire extended family.
"From the battle axe of the first wife and her insecurities, to the naivety of the fourth and the all-too-troublesome mother-in-law of the third, extended families will be able to relate to the characters.
"Whether it is killing his sister for dishonouring the family name by dating someone he has not approved of, beheading Christians or dictating fashion terms to his daughter on pain of stoning, Mohammed and Pals will deal with all these issues in a sensitive, yet laugh-out-loud, way," he added.
Donkey Dec
Other critics have said that the Mohammed story did not need any extra characters, saying that the inclusion of the mysterious Allah character that only Mohammed can see but gets him into zany situations was already too similar to the alien the Great Gazoo in the Flintstones.
"Whether it is causing him to found a new religion, or kill all the male Jews in Medina and enslaving their wives, it seems that this Allah is always getting Mohammed into even more improbable situations," said film critic Barry Norman.
Calls for the Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark, to apologise for the show have gone unheeded and it is due to be broadcast on several TV stations across the globe from next month, with Wall's Sausages sponsoring the show in the UK.
